The long awaited Greenway Santa Cycle took place on Sunday 20th March with no snow in sight! The cycle was postponed twice in December due to the weather conditions but it really was third time lucky for the 322 cyclists and 70 marshals who took part in the event to raise money and awareness for Bowel Cancer UK.

The cyclists departed from the Drawing Offices at Titanic Quarter and travelled along the Comber Greenway to Andrews Memorial School in Comber where cyclists were treated to a well deserved BBQ.

The Greenway Santa Cycle is the brainchild of local ICT Sales professional, mother and bowel cancer survivor Rosi Kirker. In December 2009 the Greenway Santa Cycle raised over £10,000 for Bowel Cancer UK and the Livestrong Foundation. This year Rosi enlisted the help of many more volunteers and sponsors and it is hoped that when the final count has taken place even more money will have been raised for Bowel Cancer UK.

100 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every day in the UK. Whilst bowel cancer is highly treatable if caught early, 16,250 people die from bowel cancer every year – making it the second most common cause of cancer death.

Many thanks to all the cyclists and volunteers who took part in the cycle, without you it would not have been possible.

Thanks also to the many sponsors for their valued contribution to the event. These include: Andrews Memorial Primary School, Ards Borough Council, Ashfield Girls’ High School, Bikedock, Business & Scientific Services Ltd, Castlereagh Borough Council (Tullycarnet Community Centre), Connswater JV, Consulate of St Vincent and the Grenadines, Consult Nb1, Crawfordsburn Filling Station, Cyclist’s Touring Club (CTC), Harcourt Construction, James Brown & Sons, McAdam Design Ltd, PSNI, Novosco, Stewart Miller & Sons Ltd, Titanic Quarter Ltd and Windwards Bananas.
