Stakeholder Forum June 2010 - Launch of Trails Guide

The Connswater Community Greenway Stakeholder Forum June meeting was held in the Elim Church, Beersbridge Road.

The attendees were updated on project progress by Wendy Langham, Programme Manager.

This forum focused particularly on the topic of public art. Deidre Robb (Arts Council NI) and Janice Smith (Belfast City Council) informed attendees of the importance of public art in terms of making the arts widely accessible to a community and also to contribute to the regeneration and enhancement of an area. Community involvement and participation is vital in ensuring that a piece of art is accepted by the community and that it relates to the culture and history of the area.

Helen McAneney updated the attendees on the PARC study progress and the research methods being used to carry out the evaluation of the CCG.

Bobby Cosgrove, East Belfast's local historian was in attendance at the event. He told attendees some interesting stories which gave an insight into times gone by in East Belfast before introducing guest speaker Ivan Little. A special thanks was given to Bobby for all his hard work and input into the compilation of information for the trails guide.

Ivan Little and Cllr Naomi Long MP MLA attended the event to launch the first Connswater Community Greenway Trails Guide. This publication is a guide to the history and wildlife of the Connswater, Knock and Loop rivers and encourages people to get out and about to see what history and heritage East Belfast has to offer. It also offers insight into how areas and streets in East Belfast got their names and provides information on some famous sons including Van Morrison and George Best.
