Greenway Reaches Nashville

Greenway Reaches Nashville East Belfast Partnership’s Connswater Community Greenway project continues to attract interest from across the Atlantic. Following visits from distinguished environmental campaigner Majora Carter and guests from the US Consulate and Department of State in recent months, Dr Robert Bogen from Nashville Tennessee called in to their office at 274 Newtownards Road to find out more about the project.

Bob was visiting Belfast as part of the Nashville delegation to the annual conference of the influential Sister Cities International being held in Belfast’s Waterfront Hall, the first time in its 50 year history this conference has been held outside the United States.

As a former city councilman for his home town of Nashville, Bob has a keen interest in developing green and open spaces and is currently working with government, council and community groups in the United States developing Greenway projects in the Nashville area. He was particularly interested on hearing about the Connswater Community Greenway project and took time out from his very busy schedule to visit the project's office on 274 Newtownards Road and walk part of the greenway's proposed route to see at first hand the scale of the project.

Speaking during his visit Bob congratulated the project on their success in securing the funding for what he felt was a particularly ambitious project saying “this is a wonderful project delivering 19Kms of high quality, safe and accessible cycle and footpaths in an urban environment and mirrors what we are trying to achieve in Nashville. The importance of such projects to the general health and wellbeing of communities living in the area cannot be over emphasised, particularly in areas such as East Belfast in which there is so obviously a need for investment in both environment and infrastructure. Greenways are a particular area of interest for me and I was delighted to have the opportunity to visit east Belfast and see at first hand your plans for the CCG. I look forward to following with interest the development of the Connswater Community Greenway and hope to have the opportunity to visit again once the project is completed.”

Speaking after the visit CCG Programme Manager Wendy Langham said “It was great to meet and talk to Bob and a wonderful opportunity to talk to someone who has worked on the development and delivery of similar projects in another country. It reaffirms for me the importance of delivering the project for the people of East Belfast and beyond and of ensuring that the project delivers something for everyone in the east of the city.”
