CCG Primary School Competition

CCG Primary School Competition

Local school children recently entered a drawing competition organised by the Connswater Community Greenway project. Over 500 entries were received from the local primary schools with a winner and runner up selected from each of the participating schools.

Judging the drawings, Eleanor Wheeler, Belfast City Council’s Artist in Residence, said: “Primary School P5 classes were asked to create drawings, one showing how the Connswater River and riverbank looks now and one showing how they see the CCG when it’s finished in 2013. There was a mixed use of materials including paint, textiles and crayon and several different perspectives were shown. A lot of promising talent.”

Eleanor was joined in the judging by Ricky Darling, Leisure Manager of Avoniel Leisure Centre and Sean Brannigan, Community Engagement Officer for the CCG.

The initiative aimed to engage the children of East Belfast to have a say and input to the £40 million project that will change the face of the area. Sean commented "It's superb that so many young people are quickly grasping the vision of what is going to improve".

The participating classes were visited by the Connswater Duck when the winners and runners up were announced. The winning drawings were then displayed at Avoniel Leisure Centre and the winners received a free family swim, courtesy of the Leisure Centre.
