SOLACE Conference Visits CCG

On 8th October 2008 Craig Melvin and Ken Dunbar of Castle Morpeth Borough Council (Northumberland) were just 2 of the 500 delegates attending the Society of Local Council and Chief Executives (Solace) annual 3 day conference held this year at Belfast’s Waterfront Hall.

Part of the conference included visits to a number of projects across Belfast and many enjoyed a stroll along a small part of the Connswater Community Greenway.  Hosted by Programme Manager Wendy Langham, the delegates walked from Victoria Park to the East Belfast Partnership offices on the Newtownards Road where they received a presentation on the successful award of Big Lottery funding and subsequent Belfast City Council and Dept Social Development funding enabling the £32million project to be delivered.

Tackling many local issues including the cleaning of and improved accessibility to the Loop, Knock and Connswater Rivers; the lack of shared open spaces for everyone in East Belfast; and the creation of jogging and cycle paths, the Connswater Community Greenway team is continuing to develop detailed plans for the linear park through East Belfast, working towards the commencement of activity on the river in early 2010.  The physical changes will be phased throughout the subsequent 3 years with bridges, paths, a community square and heritage trails all planned for completion in early 2014.
