Shopmobility in partnership with Disabled Ramblers NI organised a ramble along the Connswater Community Greenway. A group of 30 people took part using electronic scooters. The ramble followed the Greenway route from Victoria Park to Holywood Arches where it then moved onto the Comber Greenway. A picnic was enjoyed at the Hanwood Centre in Tullycarnet.

The purpose of the event was to encourage people to get out and about to use the green space available. It was also an opportunity for the CCG to get feedback from people who have access issues and to incorporate that feedback into the design of the greenway.

Launch Of CCG Trails Guide and Stakeholder Forum Print E-mail
Thursday, 01 July 2010

Friday 18th June 2010

June Stakeholder ForumThe Connswater Community Greenway Stakeholder Forum June meeting was held in the Elim Church, Beersbridge Road.

The attendees were updated on project progress by Wendy Langham, Programme Manager.

This forum focused particularly on the topic of public art. Deidre Robb (Arts Council NI) and Janice Smith (Belfast City Council) informed attendees of the importance of public art in terms of making the arts widely accessible to a community and also to contribute to the regeneration and enhancement of an area. Community involvement and participation is vital in ensuring that a piece of art is accepted by the community and that it relates to the culture and history of the area.

Helen McAneney updated the attendees on the PARC study progress and the research methods being used to carry out the evaluation of the CCG.

Bobby Cosgrove, East Belfast's local historian was in attendance at the event. He told attendees some interesting stories which gave an insight into times gone by in East Belfast before introducing guest speaker Ivan Little. A special thanks was given to Bobby for all his hard work and input into the compilation of information for the trails guide.

Ivan Little and Cllr Naomi Long MP MLA attended the event to launch the first Connswater Community Greenway Trails Guide. This publication is a guide to the history and wildlife of the Connswater, Knock and Loop rivers and encourages people to get out and about to see what history and heritage East Belfast has to offer. It also offers insight into how areas and streets in East Belfast got their names and provides information on some famous sons including Van Morrison and George Best.

Carew II Family & Training Centre, a centre providing crèche facilities, afterschools club, youth activities and adult training, was the latest recipient of a CCG Community Activity Grant, made possible by the Big Lottery Fund funding received by the Connswater Community Greenway.

Carew II held a picnic in Victoria Park which was attended by 26 of the centre’s children accompanied by 14 adults. Both children and adults alike took part in games and sports day activities followed by a well deserved picnic.

The aim of the picnic was to show the children and parents the facilities available to them at present for exercise and to highlight the plans for the park and surrounding area through the Connswater Community Greenway project.

Thankfully the sun was shining and the children were even treated to a visit from the Connswater Duck!
