The Landmark Sam Thompson Bridge at Victoria Park

Earlier this year we told you of our plans as part of Phase 1 to place a new landmark bridge in Victoria Park. This bridge will link the Park to Airport Road. This steel bowstring bridge cost approximately half a million pounds to construct and has been finished with LED lighting that can change colour. It is anticipated that the bridge will be open to the public by the end of the year. We also asked the public to name this bridge and after a public vote the proposed name went forward as "Sam Thompson Bridge" after winning with 44% of the public vote. The name was approved by Belfast City Council’s Parks and Leisure Committee on Thurs 10th October 2013 and will go to the main council’s monthly meeting at the beginning of November 2013 for ratification.
